The Wider the Better

Most of us women cringe at the thought of hearing the words "wide" and "leg" in the same sentence. It instills fear of fashion faux pas, weight gain, and non-flattering silhouettes. However, with the gorgeous flowing styles that are making appearances in the fashion world, wide-leg is becoming less scary and more desirable.

For this particular trend, it's important to fully commit to the style mantra "wider is better," or your impact won't be as strong. Don't just go for any wide-leg pant that you find in the store. Seek out the ones with loose, drapey fabrics and ultrawide silhouettes. A low-rise waist keeps the look modern and makes for a more flattering look than the high-waisted silhouettes which can create the dreaded mom-butt (unless of course you have a 5'10" model frame).

A fluid, lightweight wide-leg pant brings fresh style to spring and summer looks. Pair them with a simple top and sky-high wedges for an undeniably chic ensemble.

I have a confession: recently I've been spending a lot of time at the Library. It's a place for me to clear my head, take in intriguing surroundings, and best of all, acquire unique pieces of clothing at prices that are a steal.

This Library doesn't require a membership card, and the inventory (thankfully) lacks the inevitable mothball smell that most libraries are famous for. Instead, this Library features local and well-known clothing lines housed in a charming vintage-inspired boutique in the heart of quaint Larchmont Boulevard. What's not to love?

Stocked with plenty of burnout tees, distressed sweaters, and adorable accessories, the Library has quickly become one of my new favorite L.A. stores. About half of their well-edited clothes feature designers like J.Brand and LnA with higher-end price points, and the other half features lesser-known but still amazing lines with Urban Outfitters-type pricing. Plus, right now they are having a 50% off sale which makes every shopping trip a bit more gratifying.

While you're there, make sure that you check out the floors by the dressing rooms that have old gadgets and jewelry embedded in the cement, and the vintage luggage (I spotted a Gucci suitcase) that completes the modern-antique vibe of the store. The staff is also super-friendly and makes you feel right at home in this shopping haven.

So if you're in L.A., or will be in the future, take some time to check out Larchmont and the Library. It has the Rock Law stamp of approval so you know it must be good.

Dust Your Shoulder (Pads) Off

We say that history repeats itself, and we say that the importance of making mistakes is so that we can learn from them. If you think about it, these two concepts go hand in hand like hangers in a closet. If history is repeated, then does that mean that we failed to learn from our mistakes? I think that the true test is how the history is repeated. If it is an exact replica of an irrational mistake, then yes, we failed. However, if our mistakes are used to reinterpret history, then we have clearly learned some important lessons and taken them into consideration.

Case in point: Shoulder Pads

Some might argue that the shoulder pad was the biggest fashion mistake ever made and it contributed to the outrageousness that defined disastrous 80's style. Yet, on fall and spring runways all over the world, interpretations and nods to shoulder pads are everywhere, and this time, they are FABULOUS.

Designers have examined the concept of the bulky 80's shoulder pad, and reinterpreted it into beautiful and innovative creations that will sustain this trend for seasons to come. A strong shoulder creates structure and defines a petit waist. This is what the original shoulder pads attempted to do. Where they went wrong was that the silhouettes were too overzealous and often ended up looking clownish. So before you start raiding mom's storage closet for anything with big shoulders, take a moment to understand how today's strong shoulders have learned from previous mistakes. The trick is to refine the concept and balance it with this the rest of the garment so that the finished look is flattering, aesthetically pleasing, and interesting. We've moved on from the "bigger is better" mantra and the results are modern and chic.

Another way that the shoulder pad trend is being interpreted this season is via epaulets. We are seeing everything from demure tabs and buttons on shoulders, to bold metal chain epaulets that make a strong, fashion-forward statement.

Worn over a blazer and simple, fitted skirt, this is one accessory that has the ability to transform a look. For those who aren't quite sold enough on the trend to shop Net-A-Porter prices, keep an eye out for similar styles from BCBG coming this fall.

Finally, if you're intrigued by the trend but aren't comfortable making such a dramatic statement, try something more subtle yet still on-trend.

After a whirlwind of a month, I am finally getting a chance to post again. My apologies to all of my dedicated readers - all five of you.

It's nearly mid-April and by now I'm sure you have all returned to the land of short dresses, short skirts, and short shorts. At least for a few days here and there. Of course, as the new season arrives, new trends make their debut. One of my favorites for the spring and summer is pairing mini silhouettes with menswear pieces. The contrast of ultra-femme and uber-masculine makes for a playful and unexpected style that is sure to get noticed.

Body conscious skirts are still going strong, which means they are here to stay for at least a few more seasons. Snatch one up in a vibrant color or fun stripes, and wear it with a fitted button-down tucked in for an inspiring fashion-forward look.

A graduation, a charity event, a wedding, a birthday, a hot date...there always seems to be a reason for a new dress. I, for one, am usually jumping at the excuse to buy something new, and I'm sure that I am not alone in that matter. Oscar Fashion 2010

Last night marked the 82nd Academy Awards aka The Granddaddy of the Red Carpet. As usual, there were some hits, some misses, and some fantastic moments on the stage (Alec and Steve were spot on and still kept it classy). Even though I was SHOCKED that Avatar lost to The Hurt Locker for Best Picture, I still thought overall the night was charming. I never found myself too bored or wondering how much longer I had to endure the broadcast.

I especially loved how the nominees for Best Actor and Actress were introduced by their peers with a light anecdote about previous films they have done together. Tim Robbins' introduction of Morgan Freeman was hilarious...as Tim was reminiscing about what an amazing actor Mr. Freeman is and how close they became working on The Shawshank Redemption, he said, "I'll never forget what you told me about friendship at the end of filming that movie. You said, 'Friendship is when one friend will get the other a cup of coffee. Now do you think you could do that for me, Ted? It is Ted, right?' " Who knows if it's a true story but it was pretty damn funny.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the Fashion! Here are The Rock Law of Style's coveted winners and the dreaded "There's Always Next Year" crew.

First up is Best Dressed. And the winner is...

Sandra looked absolutely stunning in this Marchesa gown and was the epitome of Hollywood glamour. The dress along with the simple yet flawless hair and makeup made her my favorite of the night by far. On top of that, she took home the top prize of Best Actress, which truly made it her evening. She dressed to win, and win she did! Congratulations, Sandy B!

And finally, Vera Farmiga stood out in her berry colored Marchesa gown. The color was incredible and quite refreshing in the rather dull color palette that most others opted for. I know a lot of people weren't crazy about this dress, but I liked the risk. Plus, it is similar to the Marchesa gown I chose from NY Fashion Week as Oscar Worthy...so I'm a bit biased!

Faith Hill's cheesy lingerie look was such a flop that I couldn't even find who it was by. I guess no designer wanted to fess up to that inappropriate disaster! Next time keep it classy, not trashy, Faith.

Zoe Saldana was another example of a gorgeous woman gone wrong in the dressing room. While the top half of this Givenchy gown is absolutely fabulous, the bottom half just does not belong! High slit, ombre shading, train, and Spanish dancer ruffles with a gold beaded bodice?! Really, Givenchy? Really?

It's Wedding Season!

It's almost spring and many of you have probably received a few save the date cards or wedding invitations for the upcoming months. As with any event, one of the first things that us women think about is, "What should I wear?" Well, not to worry my pretties, I've scoured the web for some of the cutest and most fun styles that are wedding appropriate. Since every wedding is different in regards to the attire, I've broken these styles down into three categories to help guide you in the right direction.

A wedding is definitely about the bride, but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy your outfit, as well. After all, since I met my bf at a wedding, I am living proof that you never know who you might meet! As long as your chest isn't out for the world to see and you can sit comfortably without yanking your dress down to make it longer, then you should be ok. However, if you find yourself wondering if a certain dress is acceptable, then I would advise to err on the side of caution and pick a more conservative one.

When looking at the photos, please keep in mind that the models are usually upwards of 5'10" so they will look shorter than they would on someone who is 5'4". Here we go!

Backyard Wedding:

This is an event that is intended to be more casual and less traditional, so you have a lot of leeway when it comes to attire. Since you will likely be outside and on grass, I would definitely recommend wearing flat shoes to avoid getting your heels stuck. Long flowy frocks and pretty prints and colors lead the way in this pack.

"The September Issue" on DVD

The previous post about "Kell on Earth" explains how the TV show exposes us to what it takes to put on a runway show, but have you ever wondered what it takes to put together a leading fashion magazine? If so, then step into The September Issue and prepare to be amazed. This documentary follows legendary Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour, and her staff as they dream up and create the largest and most influential issue of the year.

With her renowned bob and mysterious poker face, Anna is a fascinating person and perhaps the most important figure in the fashion world. Designers vie for her approval and create their collections with the mantra "What Would Anna Like?" in the back of their minds. We get to enter Anna's world as she previews all of the collections privately with the designers, spends time with her daughter, and approves or denies ideas for the issue. Since she decides what goes into the magazine and the magazine defines the trends, her vision is essentially the only one that matters. In other words, the entire fashion world rests on her extremely petite shoulders.

Actress and fashion icon Sienna Miller is on the cover of this September 2007 issue and in the film we are able to see her first fitting, Anna's conceptual meeting with acclaimed photographer Mario Testino, the shoot in Rome, and the insane amount of retouching, fretting, and decision making that goes into choosing a cover photo.

We are also taken into the Vogue photo shoots that are born from the brilliant mind of Creative Director, Grace Coddington. Grace and Anna both started working at American Vogue on the exact same day, and their complex and sometimes clashing point of views make for an amazing magazine. Watching Grace's shoots come to life is one of my favorite parts of the film, and I have never looked at another fashion spread the same way.

For fashion lovers of all kinds, The September Issue belongs in your DVD collection like a little black dress belongs in your closet. It comes with a second disc full of deleted scenes including previews with Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel and John Galliano at Dior, as well as comical interviews with larger than life Editor at Large, Andre Leon Talley. This wonderful film lets us normal consumers see a perspective of the fashion world that would never be possible unless you work at Vogue.

Bravo's new TV series "Kell On Earth" has made its way into the hearts of fashion lovers faster than you can say "If You Have To Cry, Go Outside," which happens to be the title of star Kelly Cutrone's new book. Cutrone is the owner of People's Revolution, an international fashion PR house that represents countless designers and brands. Her no-frills, brutally honest, and tough business approach make Cutrone one of the most sought after publicists in the fashion world. It also happens to make for wildly entertaining television.

On the series we see what goes on behind-the-scenes to produce fashion shows, and what it takes to execute them flawlessly. From incompetent interns, struggling new hires, endless work days, and the sacrifice of any resemblance of a personal life, "Kell On Earth" makes it clear that just because it's fashion doesn't mean it's glamorous.

As a former mentor to both Lauren Conrad on "The Hills" and Whitney Port on "The City", Cutrone is no new kid on the block when it comes to reality TV. But "Kell On Earth" truly brings the business to life and invites us right in to their crazy world. We see Kelly and staff meet with designers, scout locations, plan seating, invitations, set up fashion shows, kick out 'seat crashers', and even get fired if the client is not satisfied. This is no sugar coated depiction of fashion PR - how can you not love it?

NY Fashion Week Part 2

Thursday marked the end of Mercedes Benz NY Fashion Week, and it also marked the end of the iconic Bryant Park location. Come September, NY Fashion Week will be held at Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center complex which will offer more space for the events. This week definitely ended with a bang from shows by designers such as Proenza Schouler, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Anna Sui, Marchesa, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren.

It has been so much fun to look through the endless images of brilliance that this Week has provided. One thing that really stood out was how different the point of view was for each designer. Every collection has a story, but to see how they differ from designer to designer has been such a learning experience. Vera Wang stuck to mostly all black, Anna Sui listened to her inner prairie girl, and Michael Kors did chic sportswear in such a modern way.

Even though I wanted to show and comment nearly every image from every collection, we both know that no one would ever spend that much time reading it all. So I've picked out some fun trends that we will see in the Fall so that all of you can be ahead of the game. On a side note, I was excited to see that the trends we talked about on Tuesday kept showing up in the last shows - Thigh Highs are EVERYWHERE! As is fur. Don't say I didn't warn you...

At Marc by Marc Jacobs and 3.1 Phillip Lim, the jackets, skirts, and shoes were reminiscent of Britney's "Baby One More Time" video where she dons a school girl outfit. While these 2010 looks are more refined and fashionable, you can't help but notice the inspiration.

As you may or may not know, the fashion world is in the middle of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. This is when all of the top designers come together to reveal their Fall 2010 collections to the press, buyers, and the public. In other words, we get a preview of what will be hot or not for Fall 2010.

Now since my credentials do not warrant me tickets to the coveted shows (yet), I've been following them on Elle.com so I don't miss out on the buzz. I've picked out a few trends that are popping up all over the runways to bring you a breakdown of what to expect when Autumn rolls around.

It seems more and more designers are embracing their animal instinct and using fur absolutely anywhere and everywhere for this season. Now, since the collections are debuting as we speak, I can't be sure what is real and what is faux. But please don't PETA me, I'm just the messenger. Word on the twitter street is that a few hours ago Marc by Marc Jacobs just sent an entire faux fur line down the runway so that soon we can all afford to indulge. A Tribute to Alexander McQueen

I woke up this morning to hearing the tragic news that international fashion designer Alexander McQueen has passed away. Born Lee McQueen, the British designer was a mere 40 years of age. He was found Thursday February 11, 2010 inside his London home and according to reports, the cause of death is an apparent suicide by hanging. This news comes as designers are unveiling their Fall 2010 collections at New York Fashion Week. McQueen was scheduled to show his latest collection in Paris in March.

This quote by British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman impeccably relates McQueen's contributions to the fashion world:

"His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashions shows that mixed design, technology and performance, and on another he was a modern day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn't," stated Shulman on the magazine's website.

I always admired McQueen's unique vision and ability to create things that are almost from another time or another place. His use of bold color, eccentric silhouettes, and perfect tailoring made McQueen one of the most interesting designers in the industry. Even if you didn't agree with his vision, you certainly found it intriguing. That in itself is what made McQueen such a talented designer.

Guys, Are You Well InVESTed?

Since I have had a couple of requests, today's post is for the guys. Lately I've been noticing an obscene amount of men sporting vests around LA, so of course my trendspotting instincts kicked in and I began keeping my eyes open. I must attribute this vest phenomenon to the erratic weather that LA is having. One day it's cold and rainy and the next is beautiful and sunny, so it can be quite difficult to know what to wear to stay comfortable.

Obviously vests have been around for a while, but a lot of non-hipster guys tend to be afraid. However, if styled right, I can be a huge fan of a man in a vest. But when trends come back around, it is important to pay attention to the details so that you don't just throw on a tech vest from "in the year 2000", in Conan O'Brien's words.

Now you have to ask yourself, what kind of vest man am I? Are you looking for something functionable, stylish, or sporty? Don't worry, I've done the leg work and I have you all covered.

Winter White - How to Get it Right

There is nothing more classy and refreshing than donning white in the winter and standing out amongst the sea of dark colors. However, as with all things fashion, winter white has to be done right. Not all shades of white are suitable and not all styles are created equal.

With this in mind, I have to comment on Miss Carrie Underwood's Super Bowl outfit she wore to sing the National Anthem. Since the Super Bowl broadcast is kind of a big deal, and over 106 million viewers tuned in this year for the big game, you would think that Carrie and Team Underwood might put a little more thought into what she wears.

Head to toe stark white with silver chains? I'm sorry but I just cannot get into it. I was really surprised seeing as she usually looks great. I don't know who was responsible for this getup but they must be trying to sabotage her.

When it comes to pulling off winter white, it is all about finding the right piece. Here are a few that I've come across:

Snow Day!

Growing up in Tucson, AZ and living in L.A., I've never had the opportunity to benefit from school or work being closed due to the snow. This is probably a good thing considering that cold, damp weather deters me from leaving the house unless it is absolutely necessary. However, just because I wouldn't like living in a snowy place doesn't mean that I don't like to visit them... especially if I can bring my snowboard along!

Yesterday I honored myself with a snow day and headed up to Snow Summit at Big Bear Lake. Only a little over two hours away from L.A., this place is perfect for a day trip. While the snow was terrific, I couldn't help but notice some of the outfits that weren't quite up to par. While some may say it is about the sport, us fashion lovers know it is always about the clothes, too.

Note to the guys: one piece purple outfits circa '92 are not acceptable

Note to the girls: if your ski pants give you a visible wedgie when you are simply standing, it's time for new ones.

Since snowboarding clothes aren't something that you purchase often and they can be quite pricey, I always try and go for pieces and colors that can last me a few seasons without going out of style. That way, even if you take a spill and face plant right under the chairlift, at least you'll look good doing it!

I Heart Joe Zee

Joe Zee, Creative Director of ELLE magazine, is a downright genius. As a regular on MTV's "The City" and a fixture on the fashion segments of "The Today Show", Mr. Zee has made the world of high fashion magazines a little less intimidating and a little more relatable to the real consumers.

In this month's ELLE, his Style A to Zee column explores the world of women borrowing clothing...from their men! By taking six couples and making over the men using pieces that the wives and GFs could also work into their wardrobe, Mr. Zee has officially opened Pandora's Box. Sure menswear inspired pieces are no new thing in fashion, but actually shopping with both the man and the woman in mind is quite daring. I guess if you share everything else anyway, why not clothing?

While I'm not sure how happy the guys will be with this idea, I know I'm excited! A girl is always looking for new ways to expand her wardrobe, and now we don't have to look far!

Juicy Sweatpants Do Not An Outfit Make

I had the privilege of spending a few days in my college town Tempe/Scottsdale, AZ this weekend, and I feel compelled to write about this epidemic. Unfortunately, Scottsdale style can be defined by overly flashy, too tight, diamond studded clothing (for men and women), and last but not least, Juicy Couture sweatpants. Now, besides the obvious, there are a couple of issues that I have with the last point:

1. This fad of terry cloth sweatsuits started when I was a freshman in college over 7 years ago

2. It seems the rest of the country has gotten the memo (except maybe the Real Housewives of Orange County)

3. Sweatpants in general are made for lounging around at home, not to be paired with stilettos for a day of running around town.

Sure, we have all bought into fads before, and it's not always a bad thing. But the very definition of a fad is that it is short-lived. This is why I don't understand why girls in Tempe and Scottsdale are still wearing pepto-pink terry cloth Juicy pants with tight tank tops, heels, and hair and makeup perfectly in place. There are many other more modern and more fashionable ways to be comfortable and cute.

Redemption at the SAG Awards

At the 2010 Screen Actor's Guild Awards, it wasn't just about who was the Best Dressed. In fact, it was probably more about Best Redemption from the style flops at the Golden Globes.

Congratulations to the winner Diane Kruger for wearing a stunning Jason Wu mustard yellow gown...and TOTALLY REDEEMING herself! Compared to the Golden Globes pink frilly disaster, this dress bumped her back up to the A-List. Plus she was honored with "Best Ensemble Performance" for Inglorious Basterds. With this style 180, I can't help but wonder if it was my post that encouraged her to rethink her choices for the red carpet. Ok, she probably didn't read my post, but a girl can dream!

The moral of the story is that even though these women seem to have it all, they too can stumble when it comes to fashion. But during awards season there is always a chance for redemption in case of a red carpet flop. And for us non-celebrities who suffer style slip ups, every day is a chance to redeem ourselves, and we don't have to do so in the face of public scrutiny! So don't be afraid to take risks because even if it doesn't work, tomorrow is another day to start fresh.

McSteamy at your Home!

Let's hear you shout if you like ironing! That's what I thought... I'm hearing nothing but crickets. I don't blame you, ironing is one of my least favorite activities, and I will do just about anything to avoid it. I've been known to put my clothes in the hot shower with me, spritz them with a spray bottle and shake them out, spend money on dry cleaning, or convince myself that the outfit looks "more original" with wrinkles.

However, when I started working at a boutique, I grew accustomed to using the garment steamer, and eventually I fell in love. I decided that since I stopped watching Grey's Anatomy, I needed a new McSteamy in my life, and now I don't have to resolve to my creative methods to make my clothes look fresh and wrinkle free. It heats up in about one minute, is safe on just about every fabric (please don't try to steam leather), and I don't have to worry about burning my clothes. It's also nice to not have to fuss with the ironing board.

Wish List - Current Elliot

Celebrity stylists and creators of the Current/Elliott clothing line, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, sure have me hooked. Their line was the first to start the Boyfriend Jean trend, and their clothes continue to deliver fresh style and insane comfort. The denim is incredibly soft and with such a wide variety of washes and styles, you will never want to wear anything else. Plus, their jeans run about 1-2 sizes larger than usual, so you get to buy a smaller size which is always fun! And as if it can't get any better, they are both super nice people.

These denim leggings have been on my wish list for a few months now, and one day they will be mine. Oh yes, they will be mine. Although I will probably choose different shoes to wear with them... these booties don't look quite right.

It's Raining, It's Pouring, But Outfits Don't Have to be Boring!

Mudslides, tornados, high surf, snow, and non-stop rain have been attacking Southern California this week, and according to the forecast we have at least a few more days of it. When it's pouring rain and cold outside, we tend to reach for comfy and warm clothing. But just because the weather is dreary doesn't mean your style has to be!

There are so many accessories available to lighten up your mood and put a bit of color into your rainy day. So reach for something with function and fashion, and we can all get through this together.

Golden Globes Fashion

On Sunday, January 17th, GG was the abbreviation of the day among the blogs and social media outlets. While GG usually refers to the beloved show Gossip Girl, this weekend it was all about the 67th Annual Golden Globes. Of course the awards themselves are the most important aspect of the evening, but we all know that the fashion is the most fun part!

It seemed that there were not a whole lot of risk takers on the red carpet this year, but as always, there were some absolutely beautiful ensembles, and some not so stunning ones. Shades of purple and dusty rose were the color palettes of choice, and simple silhouettes outshone the overdone and elaborate pieces.

My pick for best dressed this year was Sandra Bullock wearing Bottega Veneta. As the winner for Best Actress in a Dramatic Film for The Blind Side, it was definitely her night. The amazing color and perfectly fitted bodice were complimented by her simple dark wavy hair. I loved how the bottom of the dress was sheer, so that her legs could peek through. This saved the fabric and color from being overwhelming. Congrats, Sandra!

Runners up for Best Dressed go to the gorgeous Olivia Wilde in a beaded Gucci gown, Emily Blunt in Dolce & Gabanna, and Maggie Gyllenhaal in RM by Roland Mouret.

Now for those who missed the mark at the GGs... With assistance from top stylists, access to any designer gown, and months to prepare, sometimes you have to wonder, "What were they thinking?"

This year's winner for Worst Dressed goes to Diane Kruger in Christian Lacroix Haute Couture. The sleeves are too puffy, the hair is dated, and with the frills and white bow, the dress reminds me of something a little girl should wear to a school recital. This goes to show that even though it sports a designer tag, it doesn't make it a must-have.

Runners up in this undesirable category are:

Fergie, whose Elie Saab gown looked like a department store prom dress.

Chloe Sevigny in Valentino had the right idea, but ruffles across the neck and down both sides looked silly.

Kate Hudson had a love/hate moment in her structured Marchesa gown. I loved the top half, but again, with large ruffled details down both sides and triple platform shoes it just proved to be too overdone.

All in all it was a great night to watch and I applaud the attendees for braving the rain and not making a fuss. Congrats to all of the winners, I can't wait for the Oscars!

Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria - up close and personal

Short post today because I'm on my way to Austin for the weekend, but I had to share these pics and promote the new movie The Young Victoria. Last night star Emily Blunt did a Q&A session at the end (reason #31 why I love L.A.). Not only was the movie fantastic and interesting, but she was adorable and so talented. I'm normally not a big fan of period films, but this movie is absolutely wonderful. It doesn't have the stuffy vibe that many royalty films have, and it is a very real and refreshing portrayal of the longest reigning Queen of England.

Produced by Graham King (The Departed), Martin Scorsese, and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, this is definitely one to enjoy.

PS - love her understated yet great style!

A Letter to Project Runway

Dear Project Runway,

I have been a fan of your show from the first episode, and even have you listed under "Favorite TV Shows" on my Facebook profile.

However, last season was a trying time for our relationship. First, you got my hopes up by moving to L.A., and then you were filmed at FIDM, where I was going to school. I felt closer to you than ever before and I was excited for a new approach. But then your air date kept getting pushed back because NBC and Lifetime were fighting over you and by the time you aired, the buzz had died down, and you lost some of your appeal.

I don't know if it was the new network (Lifetime just isn't as edgy as Bravo), the new location (Los Angeles isn't for everyone), or the long wait, but I just could not connect with you like I usually do.

Having said that, I understand that you were in a transitional period, and I believe in second chances. S.O.S. - Save Our Soles!

In the world of fashion, looking fabulous often comes first, while comfort is a distant second. Shoes are a prime example of this since most of the boots, pumps, sandals, and heels that we stick our feet into are hardly orthopedically beneficial. If you are anything like me, you have probably learned to ignore the pain and keep on strutting.

However, last year I learned the hard way that ignorance is not always bliss. After months of stubborn foot pain, I finally dragged myself to the doctor only to discover that I had a broken bone in the ball of my foot...most likely caused by wearing high heels. This landed me three and a half months in a walking cast and near abandonment of my shoe collection - a very tough sentencing for a style maven.

While I'm happy to say that my foot healed, I have been forever cautioned about the dangers of high heels. I wear them on special occasions, and skip them if I know I will be on my feet a lot. I also take precautions to prevent another injury, and one of them is increased cushioning. After realizing that the shoe inserts sold in stores did not provide enough comfort, I turned to something else...silicone nipple concealers.

Yes, that's right, I started using nipple concealers on the ball of my foot and the comfort level has increased immensely! They provide much more cushion than the other inserts, and you can use them in just about any shoe. My pick is the "Smooth 'em" concealers by Pure Style Girlfriends, $17, available at specialty retailers and online at www.barenecessities.com. On a side note, they work great in their primary function, as well.

Sometimes in fashion, you have to think outside the box to reap the rewards. Give them a shot, I'm sure your feet will be grateful.

It's Always Sunny

I truly believe that there are many ways to look great and have fun with fashion without breaking the bank. We all know that while designer clothes, bags, and shoes are amazing, their price tag isn't always practical.

Sunglasses are the one item that I do believe in splurging on. I just cannot help myself, I absolutely adore them, and I wear them everyday. I've come to accept this and have decided that all vices are ok in moderation, right? And depriving myself of what I love will only lead to bigger problems, RIGHT? So, in order to keep my habit in check while still enjoying it, I allow myself to buy one to two new pairs a year, and try to keep the price within reason.

However, with these MICHAEL Michael Kors "Medina" Aviators, my vice will hardly be considered a problem. Priced at $85, these sunnies will add some bounce to your step all the way into Spring. With three fresh two-tone color combos, the only tough decision will be which pair to choose. I can't wait to get my hands on them!

Sparkle from the Outside

You've probably noticed that sequins and shine are a big trend right now, and they've presented the opportunity to change up a look and be a little daring. However, some of us might not be at the confidence level that we think it takes to pull off sequins without being a fashion faux-pas. Even if your fashion "don't" doesn't end up on the Worst Dressed List in US Weekly, it is still never something to aspire to.

The great thing is, anyone and everyone can pull off sequins. It is just a matter of choosing the right pieces and balancing them with the rest of the outfit. The trick is to focus on one "wow" piece, and work the rest of the outfit around it. For example, choose a sequin beret like this one from Forever 21 and pair it with a simple white v-neck tee and dark skinny jeans. Top it off with black, brown, or tan heels for the perfect casual night out.

If it's your legs that are craving some attention after being covered up for the winter, try out a pair of sequin leggings like these black ones from Mango. I know they may seem a little bold for some of you, but again, styled the right way they can be your new best friend. Since they are a statement piece, make sure to keep the rest of the outfit quite simple. A longer black tee and simple heels with a long gold necklace and some berry lips are all you need to Rock this look.

Are you getting curious yet? Go ahead, surprise yourself! Anything sequins means automatic fun, so feel free to try what works for you. Shorts, vests, blazers, bandeau tops... you can find just about everything with sequin detail nowadays. Just remember to let whatever you choose standout and tone down the rest.

All About Nails

Every girl knows that nothing makes you feel more put-together than a fresh manicure and pedicure. When I walk out of the salon with beautiful nails I feel like I can take on the world. Nails are often overlooked, but they are not something that should be ignored. Even though you think people might not be noticing them, they are. You only get one chance at a first impression!

Now here comes the debate of acrylic nails v. real nails. While I understand the desire to have longer and stronger nails, it seems that real is making a long-awaited comeback. Embrace what you've got and pick a fun color to show them off! Plus real nails are much less expensive to maintain, and what girl couldn't use a little extra cash?

Whatever color you choose, the importance should be placed on the upkeep. Manicures generally last one week before the chips start and the polish should be removed. Once you remove the polish, feel free to paint them a light or clear color or just leave them nude until your next appointment. Remember that nail polish is only part of the manicure, the cuticle maintenance and shape are just as important. Pedicures can last up to three weeks as long as you scrub in the shower to keep your skin soft.

As I was sifting through the December issue of Vogue, this accessory spread jumped out at me and I could not stop admiring the model's nails. The polish is "Mink Muffs" by Essie, and it is just the right amount of winter warmth and classic appeal to carry us into the spring. I think it's a color that will endure long-term success...just as all of you will!

Gloves...The Underrated Accessory

Even though L.A. currently feels more like May outside when it's supposed to be winter, I still cannot help but want to extend the use of my cold weather clothes. Fall and winter seasons bring so many more options when it comes to clothing, especially due to all of the fun and functional accessories that we can use to stay warm.

One of my absolute favorite winter accessories are the underrated and underused gloves. Nothing is able to transform my stylitude more than a pair of gloves. Achieve instant elegance with elbow length gloves like the suede ones shown below from Nordstrom.com.

Or channel your inner Rockstar with these fingerless leather faux-fur lined gloves by Deena and Ozzy. Santa brought me a pair and I can't take them off! Bright nails top off the look and your fingers are free to text and use touchscreen devices.

Gloves make a statement of confidence and fearlessness... don't be afraid to use them! Remember that it doesn't have to be freezing outside to Rock them, either. Long gloves can be worn with a sleeveless cardigan and jeans, with a skinny belt wrapped around a flirty dress, or over a tight long sleeve shirt. Fingerless gloves are a great way to spice up any outfit for a fun night out. Give them a try and you will find that the compliments will start rolling in. Trust me.

So I know that there are hundreds if not thousands of fashion-related blogs on the web, and yes, some of you might think that the need for one more doesn't exist. However, I am here to prove that theory to be incorrect. I am taking on this challenge of creating a real, useful, and creative perspective on fashion and personal style.

At this point, you might be asking yourself, "Who is she to put her perspective out to guide others?" Well, that's the fun part. I don't claim to be anyone who I'm not. I am simply a twentysomething woman living in Los Angeles who happens to adore everything fashion. I've been complimented on my sense of style throughout my life (and not just by my parents like those painful American Idol auditions who insist that their mother thinks they have the voice of an angel). As I have grown up, I have also grown into my sense of style and have made it my own, and my passion. I have an eye for what works and what doesn't. When to take a risk and when to tone it down. There are many "laws" of style that we see month by month in the magazines and on TV, but this is my take on those laws of style - The Rock Law of Style.

So it is purely my instinct that has led me to this world of internet writing in order to share my eye with others who might be feeling a little lost in the fashion world, or with those who are just curious. Whatever your reason, I am grateful that you have stumbled upon this blog, and I hope you enjoy what you see.
