NY Fashion Week Part 2

Thursday marked the end of Mercedes Benz NY Fashion Week, and it also marked the end of the iconic Bryant Park location. Come September, NY Fashion Week will be held at Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center complex which will offer more space for the events. This week definitely ended with a bang from shows by designers such as Proenza Schouler, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Anna Sui, Marchesa, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren.

It has been so much fun to look through the endless images of brilliance that this Week has provided. One thing that really stood out was how different the point of view was for each designer. Every collection has a story, but to see how they differ from designer to designer has been such a learning experience. Vera Wang stuck to mostly all black, Anna Sui listened to her inner prairie girl, and Michael Kors did chic sportswear in such a modern way.

Even though I wanted to show and comment nearly every image from every collection, we both know that no one would ever spend that much time reading it all. So I've picked out some fun trends that we will see in the Fall so that all of you can be ahead of the game. On a side note, I was excited to see that the trends we talked about on Tuesday kept showing up in the last shows - Thigh Highs are EVERYWHERE! As is fur. Don't say I didn't warn you...

Trendspotting #6 - School Girl
At Marc by Marc Jacobs and 3.1 Phillip Lim, the jackets, skirts, and shoes were reminiscent of Britney's "Baby One More Time" video where she dons a school girl outfit. While these 2010 looks are more refined and fashionable, you can't help but notice the inspiration.

Trendspotting #7 - Suspenders
Feeding off of the school girl trend comes the use of suspenders. These bad boys are no longer reserved for only the hipsters or the geeks from the 80's movies, they have officially gone chic in both pant and skirt forms.

Trendspotting #8 - Black Pant
Black pants have been a staple piece for women's wardrobes for decades, but wearing them for a night out feels soooo 1998. However, this Fashion Week, designers brought the Black Pant back to life by pairing it with sexy tops for an updated look.

Trendspotting #8 - Edgy Sophistication
Get ready to glam up with touches of hardware, leather details, and unexpected accessories to give your sophisticated look a touch of edge. Fashion is all about pushing the envelope, and these designers definitely know how to do it right. Putting on any of these looks would automatically give you rock star status.

BONUS! Oscar Worthy Gowns
On March 7, 2010 actresses will pull out all of the stops for film's biggest night of the year, The Academy Awards. At the Oscars, nothing is too glamorous and it is so much fun to see what everyone wears. Here are a couple of gowns that I spotted and would love to see on the red carpet. In a few weeks we will see if anyone chose to wear them!

New York Fashion Week coverage has been a blast to put together, and I hope you all enjoyed my interpretation of some of the big upcoming trends for the Fall. I can't wait to see them hit the stores!

Fashion Week Part 1

As you may or may not know, the fashion world is in the middle of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. This is when all of the top designers come together to reveal their Fall 2010 collections to the press, buyers, and the public. In other words, we get a preview of what will be hot or not for Fall 2010.

Now since my credentials do not warrant me tickets to the coveted shows (yet), I've been following them on Elle.com so I don't miss out on the buzz. I've picked out a few trends that are popping up all over the runways to bring you a breakdown of what to expect when Autumn rolls around.

Trendspotting #1 - Fur
It seems more and more designers are embracing their animal instinct and using fur absolutely anywhere and everywhere for this season. Now, since the collections are debuting as we speak, I can't be sure what is real and what is faux. But please don't PETA me, I'm just the messenger. Word on the twitter street is that a few hours ago Marc by Marc Jacobs just sent an entire faux fur line down the runway so that soon we can all afford to indulge. Unfortunately there aren't any pics posted quite yet... but here are a couple of hot looks so far.

Trendspotting #2 - Jewel-tone Color
Steel blue, emerald green, deep purple, chartreuse, and ruby seemed to be the colors of choice for the designers, showing that Fall doesn't have to be dark and grey.

Trendspotting #3 - Thigh High Leggings
Of course we are all familiar with leggings, jeggings (jean leggings), and tights - Oh My! But this season we are seeing thigh high leggings all over the place, and I have a feeling they're going to be a hit. Notice that Jill Stuart touched on the trend with thigh high socks under knee high boots in the photos above. Below are a few more ways it was done.

Trendspotting #4 - Belts with a Purpose
Whether they have attached pockets, pouches to keep your things, or a design that adds a whole new element of style to the outfit, belts are stepping up and proving they can be great multi-taskers and they deserve to be noticed.

Trendspotting #5 - Posh Prairie
This trend will let you channel your inner "Little House on the Prairie" desires and frolic through the meadows (or walk down the street) in these sweet and innocent looks with a twist.

With the collections and trends that have shown up so far, I can definitely say that I am excited for the Fall. Designers seem to be pushing themselves yet doing so in a way that can be easily translated to the everyday consumer. I will keep you posted on the last few days of NY Fashion Week and let you know what other trends I see coming.
